Pakistan Fashion Designer : Nadia Lakdawala

Nadia Lakdawala romance with fashion began in 1999 when she launched her eponymous line of bridal haute couture and prêt wear. Since then there has been no looking back for the Nadia Lakdawala label whose design impel us is the perfect antidote to the festive "mehndi or mayoun"

The label is a glorious mélange of elaborate pattern making; intricate detailing; and rich, vibrant hues moulded from classic chunri, bandhni and "discharge prints" into delightfully ethnic ghararas, shararas and Dhoka pajamas with their hint of romantic whimsy and ethnic allure.

Nadia describes her own label as a perfect amalgamation of complimentary crafts and arts techniques that create sleek, structured and elegant silhouettes in a festive array of colors.

" The Nadia Lakdawala label has exhibited in major cities in Pakistan including Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar and Multan; and US cities including Houston, Dallas and Los Angeles.

Nadia also shoed her stunning collection at the "Vivaha" bridal exhibition in Delhi and Mumbai in August and September 2005 where her indigenously produced bandlni was hugely popular and created the exhibition's main conversation piece.

Pakistan Fashion Designer : Amir Adnan

Despite it being a textile hub, fashion, style and glamour are not labels commonly associated with the industrial Punjab city of Faisalabad. Amir Adnan took up the challenge to introduce all these aspects of modern high street style to the textile capital of Pakistan. In doing so, Amir Adnan along with his team of organizers took Faisalabad by storm. Advertising was prominent in all the major newspapers and there were hoardings all over the city. The fashion show was Aamir Adnan and Huma Aamir Adnan's first trip to the city where they presented their exquisite collection of casuals, semi-formals and formal wear for both men and women.

Aamir Adnan yet is looking beyond the usual horizons and planning to open an outlet in every possible prospective market of fashion. Aamir Adnan organised a fashion show in Pakistan with special help from old friends and colleagues like Khawar Riaz (KR CREW) and Ather Hafiz, the men's wear designer at Libas. Khawar Riaz provided the models and was in charge of their grooming and make-up.

The collection that was presented on the stage carried a wide range of designs and latest styles of formal shalwar kameez and semi-formal salwar kameez for both genders. The men's collection portrayed simple colours like black, blues, greens and browns with the elegance of embroidery on kurta and sherwanis that is associated with all Amir Adnan products. The eastern wedding wear was the most well received. The second segment of groomswear capsuled the glory and majesty of our traditions. The sherwanees were elegantly embroidered using semi-precious stones and delicate hand embroidery that made every model look like a member of the royal courtyard of the Maharajas and Emperors. Pure silk Jamewar turbans provided the picture perfect glory of the past represented as today's fashion statement.

Females were also dressed to create an awareness of fashion in Pakistan. Huma Adnan's beautiful collection was displayed on the ramp like a soft spring breeze blowing in the heat of the scorching summer sun. Huma Adnan's collection consisted of beautiful and detailed cuts that are the perfect amalgamation of western styles with an eastern touch for the modern woman of not just Pakistan but the world. The designer plans to launch this fusion line in the USA very soon. Huma Adnan stylized collection of bridals matched the sartorial image of their male counterparts. Presenting brides and grooms together allowed the designers to represent traditions with style.

Pakistan Fashion Designer : Deepak Perwani

He’s a live wire - sparking every instant! And his haute couture is no different and not any less experimental than that of Gaultier. He came to the fashion scene, when things were just beginning to charge; he just stepped in by chance and added the much-needed spark. Deepak Perwani - was his name. Now it’s his ‘signature’ style.

Deepak is an icon. He’s a man, with true grit. Every time he creates a piece, it's to satisfy his own creative aspirations. He never believes in mass-producing the kind of fashion wares people like to buy; he tunes them into buying what ‘he’ thinks ‘they’ should buy - That’s the theory behind the eventful success of the decade.

After five very exciting years in New York, which also included a year at the FIT, Deepak’s luck ran out, when daddy said, ‘no more money for you baby, come back home!’ So, it was ‘walking into non-civilization again’ that’s how Deepak likes to put it. But that’s when the lines on his palm restructured - this young, robust, energetic young man who was bored to the hilt, took a fancy to designing an odd nineteen shirts just because he had nothing better to do.

As the fading century slips into the new millennium, his couture shows signs of staying power and a newfound confidence. The Dubai show was an instant sellout with his truck art accents, and the Zargalli premier, Deepak broke all hell loose when he sent models down the runway in the most sensuous and seductively draped ensembles that complimented the jewelry presentation perfectly well. Despite the fact that today Deepak Perwani is a big name; the real man shows no signs of arrogance or snootiness.

He never suffered from an inflated ego; humble to the core Deepak truly believes in the ‘live and let live philosophy’ and may be that’s the reason for his glorious success.

Pakistan Fashion Designer : Maria B

Only twenty four years and she is ready to take over the catwalks in Paris, Milan and New York, Maria Belal is an ambitious young Pakistani designer with vision. A graduate of the Pakistan School of Fashion Design, Maria launched her label ‘Maria B’ in Lahore back in March 99. Right after the fashion show, she opened the doors to her new boutique located in the Defence residential area. Her cotton shalwar kameez and embroidered evening wear, all meticulously cut and stitched, were quickly snapped up by trendy Lahoris.

During her four years at the Fashion School, Maria learnt to make patterns, drape and stitch by hand – all that hard work has obviously paid off. Maria’s clothes can be described as chic and modern – they are wearable, well-cut and neatly finished. For the shoot with Meera, she selected outfits off the rack. “I wanted a glamourous look – to depict a lifestyle with a certain image. These are clothes for every occasion; they are laid back and eccentric.” The outfits she has selected – from a cotton sleeveless shalwar kameez to black net culottes to a chiffon sari – embody her look for the modern Pakistani woman in the late 90s.

Unlike other aspiring designers in Pakistan, Maria has been exposed to the international fashion scene early in her career. While still a student, in 1997 she participated in Forcea, a competition in for young designers, in Belgium and walked away with the “Les Etoiles De La Mode” Award. “I had designed some modern, futuristic pieces, but I had used traditional embroideries and indigenous materials. I didn’t expect much, but I did try my best – after all, we were the first batch from Pakistan to participate in this event, she recalls. Maria went home with an award and there was no turning back. She learnt that there was tremendous scope for Pakistani fabrics in the international market and was determined to make her mark globally. As she says with confidence, “I’m a staunch patriot – I want to take Pakistan’s name in the international fashion scene. I want to show people around the world what a great heritage we have. That really is the core philosophy of my business. We want to go into the international market and prove ourselves as a Pakistani brand name.”

Maria’s main goal is to export her outfits abroad – “I want to send haute-couture items such as evening wear, bridal wear etc. to Europe and then eventually to the US.” She knows it is difficult to break into the international market and has given herself ten years to do so. “That is how long it takes for most designers – so it is good that I am starting so young!” She remains undaunted by the global competition and says “you have to aim high – and I do want to get to New York, Milan and Paris one day.”

Face Tools : Sponge? Puff? or Brush?

Which applicators are right for your makeup routine? It’s time to find out!

Sponge

Sponges are perfect for liquid or cream-based formulas. They provide the fullest and most precise application. Dip a sponge into your liquid makeup and smooth a thick layer all over your face. Add extra coverage in areas with uneven tone.

Puff

Puffs work great for powdering on the go. They fit into most compacts and provide buildable yet even coverage. Lightly dab the puff over shiny or uneven areas. A few thin layers provide better coverage than one thicker one.

Brush

There’s a brush for every application, from eyeshadow to blush. Brushes are great for precise application of powder formulas. Just like puffs, a few thin layers applied with a brush are better than one thicker one.

Face Tools : How to wash your brush

Keep your tools in shape, just like the pros do.

To clean makeup brushes, pour a mild household liquid soap or baby shampoo into the palm of your hand and mix with water. Use your hand as a cup for the warm, soapy water and swirl brushes in your palm until they are clean. Rinse well, then gently squeeze excess water from the brush and let air-dry. Don't soak brushes in the sink. Too much time in water can loosen the bristles and ruin your brush!
